Watch full video

BOSTON — New flights from seaplane operator Tailwind Air will launch next week from Boston Harbor bound for the East River in Manhattan, connecting the core of the two East Coast cities.

A dedicated, seven-minute water taxi will transfer passengers to or from the South Boston waterfront to the seaplane docked in Boston Harbor. The plane, which seats a maximum of nine passengers will then depart on an approximately 75-minute flight to Manhattan’s New York Skyport, located at East 23rd Street along the East River.

The first flights take off on Aug. 3.

“By offering nonstop, weekday flights at peak hours to and from Manhattan and Boston Harbor, we present exclusive time savings over all other modes of transportation, at a reasonable price premium,” Tailwind Air CEO and founder Alan Ram said. “Our [Tailwind] service combines the accessibility of the train with the speed of a flight.”

The airline plans to operate four flights weekdays between the two cities.

Planes are set to depart Boston Harbor and arrive in Manhattan at the following times:

  • 7 a.m – 8:25 a.m. (starting Aug. 21)
  • 10:05 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
  • 2:10 p.m. – 3:35 p.m. (starting Aug. 21)
  • 5:20 p.m. – 6:45 p.m.

Planes are set to depart Manhattan and arrive in Boston Harbor at the following times:

‘Manhattan In 75 Minutes’: First Look At Boston-New York Seaplane Service

Watch full video

Rachel Holt

BOSTON (CBS) – A first look at a new way to travel from Boston- by air and water.

“A plane like this delivers the ability to bring New York and Boston much closer together,” said Peter Manice, Tailwind Air’s Director of Schedule Services.

WBZ-TV got a bird’s-eye view of the city and previewed Tailwind Air’s seaplane service launching August 3, which will offer non-stop flights out of Boston Harbor to New York City.

Tailwind Air Cessna Grand Caravan EX in Boston (WBZ-TV)

Starting out, the flights will be offered twice a day on weekdays and service will be expanded to four times a day on August 21. The Cessna Grand Caravan EX can hold up to eight passengers.

“You’re going to be in Manhattan in 75 minutes and land on the East River at 23rd Street and be on your way to your meeting or whatever you’re planning on doing in Manhattan,” said Manice.

“We’ve had great, great, great interest. We’ve sold a lot of bookings. People seem really excited and we’re eager to get it going and then expand it,” said Tailwind Air CEO Alan Ram.

A short water taxi ride to a floating dock from Fan Pier in the Seaport is also part of the experience.

“You’re going to be right downtown to downtown so you’re not going to have to catch a cab and try to cross over some bridges. You’re going to be right into where you want to be,” said Tailwind Air Captain Adam Schewitz.

One-way fares start at just under $400 so it’s not cheap, but Tailwind Air says by leaving from the Harbor instead of the airport, their flights are the fastest way to travel between each city.

“Essentially if you take the shuttle, the Delta shuttle, American shuttle, or you take the train or you drive, it’s always going to take you about four hours to go door to door. But with this you can get from downtown Boston to New York in 2 hours or less,” said Ram.

“We hope to save people 40 to 60 percent off the current fastest times that the airline shuttles can provide,” said Manice.

“There’s a lot of leg room, the windows as you can see are really big. And so, you get actually great views and a nice experience in addition to getting there really fast,” said Ram.

A-plane, B-plane, seaplane.

A terrible joke. I know, and I’m sorry (not that sorry).

I’ve always thought seaplanes were exceptionally cool, ever since I was a little kid in Brooklyn watching them leaving and approaching the East River.

There’s just something exceptionally fun about seeing a plane flying low carrying pontoons that are almost as big as the fuselage itself, with the ability to go where other aircraft can’t, with a unique mix of grace and clumsy awkwardness.

Want more airline-specific news? Sign up for TPG’s free new biweekly Aviation newsletter!

Modern seaplanes (technically “floatplanes”) are a far cry from the Pan Am Clipper flying boats of an era gone by, but there’s still something about them that’s just cool, and useful; seaplanes arguably make the Maldives viable as a vacation destination, for instance.

Now, I’m excited to fly on a seaplane a bit closer to home.

Tailwind, a small scheduled shuttle and charter operation based in New York, this week announced new seaplane service between Manhattan’s New York Skyport, on the East River at 23rd Street, and Boston Harbor.

The carrier typically runs shuttle routes from Manhattan to summer hotspots on Long Island — East Hampton, Shelter Island and Montauk — as well as Bridgeport, Connecticut — using a fleet of eight-seat Cessna 208 Caravan turboprops with an amphibious configuration, meaning they can land and take-off on both paved runways and water. For charters, the airline can also arrange for other types of aircraft.

Tailwind will be the first airline to launch seaplane service between the two cities in modern times, after Cape Air pulled back on plans that it had set in February 2020, which were derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Both Cape Air and Tailwind have been working on launching seaplane service between the cities for more than half a decade. Tailwind won final approval from the Federal Aviation Administration earlier this month.

The airline will start with two round-trips per day on Aug. 3, before increasing service to four daily round-trips on August 23. The seasonal service will run through November, and resume in March.

Tailwind argues its seaplane service to Boston will be faster overall than the train or a traditional plane. (Screenshot via Tailwind)

Flying time will be about 75 minutes, with a total of fewer than 90 minutes “dock to dock,” the Boston Globe reported. That beats the fastest train option — about three and a half hours on the Acela — and while the flying time is longer than on the regular airline shuttles, which are blocked at 80 minutes, the seaplane will eliminate the airport travel time.

On the Boston side, the flights will dock remotely near the East Boston shoreline, with a 7-minute water taxi connecting passengers to Fan Pier

The service is mostly geared towards business travelers — flights start at $395 one-way, and go up to as much as $795.

Flights between New York and Boston start at $395 each way, but can go up to as much as $795. (Screenshot via Tailwind)

I lived in New York for most of my life but recently moved to Boston, so the new service is particularly exciting for me — even if it will be prohibitively expensive. Still, more options are always a good thing and being Boston-based, I’m the perfect candidate to check out Tailwind’s first flight for TPG when it launches in August.

Plus, I’ll finally get to be on one of those seaplanes in the East River that I used to watch as a kid.

Nonstop seaplane trips to Manhattan coming to Boston Harbor

Watch video

BOSTON (WHDH) – Boston residents will be able to fly to Manhattan by seaplane beginning in August.

Tailwind Air says the nonstop commercial flights will be taking off right from Boston Harbor and the company hopes this new venture will allow them to set their sights on travel to even more destinations.

“Very excited, it took a multi-year process that had a lot of oversight from a lot of stakeholders,” explained Director of Scheduled Operations Peter Manice.

The plane has room for eight passengers onboard.

“It’s gonna look a lot more like a Cape Air flight,” said Manice. “Something many Bostonians might be familiar with.”

It has been several decades since the last seaplane took off from the Harbor.

“Boston used to have seaplane service in the 1930s and 1940s, but that has faded away,” Manice said.

Tailwind Air said a number of other cities already do commercial seaplane flights and they hope this is the first of many for Boston.

“Its waterways can provide access to let’s say cities within a 200 mile, 250-mile radius of Boston in a way that’s much much faster,” Manice said.

Seaplanes will finally launch from Boston Harbor in just a few weeks

New York-based airline will begin offering two round trips daily to Manhattan on Aug. 3, after years of planning and testing

Tailwind Air has won the race to bring commercial seaplane service to Boston Harbor.

The Rye Brook, N.Y.-based airline is launching ticket sales this week for flights to New York that begin on Aug. 3. It has taken more than five years for Tailwind to get this venture off the ground — or, more accurately, off the water. That’s how long Tailwind and rival Cape Air have been chasing permits, running test flights, and drumming up support among a somewhat skeptical public.

Tailwind received its final approval from the Federal Aviation Administration last week for the Boston-Manhattan flights. The company will start with two round trips a day, grow to four on Aug. 23, and continue them through the end of November. (They’ll start back up again in March.) Chief executive Alan Ram said the trips will take under 90 minutes from dock to dock, allowing passengers to avoid the tunnel and bridge traffic and long security lines that are standard headaches when traveling through the main airports in both cities.

Tailwind Air Announces First Ever Route Between Boston Harbor and Manhattan

Boston Harbor to Manhattan’s East River Service by Seaplane Reduces Total Travel Times 40% to 60%. Fares from $395 one way.

July 19, 2021– Fly the Fast Lane with Tailwind Air. Experienced seaplane operator announces groundbreaking scheduled service, creating the fastest way between Manhattan and Boston. Travelers may now enjoy a nonstop, seaplane flight directly from Manhattan’s New York Skyport (IATA code: NYS) on East 23rd Street to Boston Harbor (IATA Code: BNH), where a dedicated, seven-minute water taxi will transfer clients to the South Boston waterfront. Flights areapproximately seventy-five minutes and start August 3rd, 2021.

“By offering nonstop, weekday flights at peak hours to and from Manhattan and Boston Harbor, we present exclusive time savings over all other modes of transportation, at a reasonable price premium,” CEO and Founder of Tailwind Air, Alan Ram, explains. “Our [Tailwind] service combines the accessibility of the train with the speed of a flight.”

“Seaplanes and waterway access fuel our exclusive service–a game changer for travellers between these cities,” added Peter Manice, Director of Scheduled Operations, “no one else is doing this.” Bypassing the congestion of Boston Logan International as the first to fly directly into Boston Harbor, Tailwind Air is a pioneer in regional urban mobility, while using long-proven technology.

Tailwind Air erases the hassle and expense of commuting to an airport and lengthy check-in, security, and boarding processes. “By cutting travel times 40%-60%, Tailwind Air’s premium service reduces aggravation and opens up half day business trips.” Due to the eight-passenger capacity of the seaplanes, and small, efficient facilities, guests can arrive for check-in as little as ten minutes before departure.

While Tailwind Air’s seaplane fleet is young, less than five-years on average, seaplane travel certainly is not. The Manhattan Skyport opened in 1936, hosting popular seaplane travel for decades. For nearly 100 years, seaplane operations have been part of the core transportation landscape of maritime cities such as Seattle, Miami, and Vancouver. “By reconnecting Boston and New York City via seaplane, we more closely unite two urban cores.”

Boston Harbor-Manhattan flights, and a complete schedule for all flights operated by Tailwind Air, can be found at flytailwind.com. Tickets can be purchased on the website, by phone, and through local and online travel agencies via a codeshare partnership with Southern Airways Express.

As North America’s largest passenger operator of Cessna Caravans, Southern Airways has been pleased to partner for the past two years with one of the leading Caravan seaplane operators, Tailwind Air,” said Stan Little, Chairman and CEO of Southern Airways. “Connecting Boston and New York Harbors by air is indeed a game-changer, and we are proud to be the exclusive airline codeshare partner on this venture.”

For travel agents interested in partnerships, Tailwind Air offers generous commission rates. Tailwind Air also offers discounted prepaid commuter books of 10, 20, and 50 tickets for passengers, which can be shared with colleagues, friends, and family that save 35% or more off of last minute fares. Corporate rates are also available. To learn more, contact boston@flytailwind.com

Tailwind Air’s fleet of Cessna Grand Caravan EX amphibians is piloted by experienced and highly qualified captains. Tailwind Air plans to add additional route offerings in 2022, as well as to advance electric seaplane technology and explore innovations in urban air mobility.

“This new route is breaking barriers,” says Ram. “We are grateful for the tremendous local support in Boston we have received and aim to be good neighbors and an important addition to Boston’s economic boom. We eliminate the time needed to travel to airport terminals, long security lines, check-in, board, and await the flight’s turn on the runway. We are honored to be welcomed into the Boston community as well as see continued support from Manhattan.” Ram and Manice share a vision for fast travel choices using the most versatile aircraft. “We hope to strengthen our presence in the communities we serve through community and business leaders, citizens, aviation enthusiasts, and welcome new partnerships.”

Safety and Cleanliness

In accordance with the recommended safety-precautions to protect against COVID-19, Tailwind Air requires masks for all staff and passengers while flying. Further precautions include deep cleaning lounges and aircrafts, reducing the number of interactions common in larger airports and airplanes and operating with an eight-passenger flight capacity.
